Public libraries as places for self-directed lifelong learning: narratives of empowerment

Introduction. The purpose of this study is to explore how library-based groups in Japanese public libraries serve as arenas for citizens’ self-directed learning, and the role played lives group members. Method. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four participants, focussing on backgrounds interests Analysis. Categorical content analysis was implemented clarify three research questions 1) Recognition a place learning empowerment, 2) Relationships other members 3) Affiliations libraries. Results. provided which could pursue learning; develop meaningful adult relationships; through they affect positive change their communities. Conclusions. perceived tools self-realisation places where satisfy intellectual needs. Participation also fostered members’ civic awareness gave them outlets engagement related promotion literacy and, more broadly, education.
